Bristol Retail Confronts Headwinds from Decades of Unit Losses
The sector faces persistent contraction pressures even as certain locations record visitor increases.
How we reported this

Bristol has lost 350 retail units since 2000, a long-term contraction that continues to shape the challenges facing the local sector this year.
Long-Term Contraction Sets the Context
This sustained reduction in physical retail space underscores broader pressures on high streets and retail parks, where operators must adapt to fewer outlets while competing for remaining demand. The loss of hundreds of units since the turn of the century illustrates why many locations now emphasise experience-led formats to retain footfall.
Resilience in Specific Locations
Park Street recorded a 20% footfall surge in 2025, supported by vintage and independent shops. Bristol city centre overall posted a 1.2% footfall increase that year, contrasting with a 1.3% national decline. Early 2025 visitor numbers rose 4.5% and outperformed eight other major UK retail centres, showing that targeted areas can still attract more people despite the city-wide reduction in units.
Brand Activity and Retail Park Shifts
New openings at Cabot Circus during 2025-2026 include Lego, Look Fantastic, Joe & The Juice, Odeon and Marks & Spencer. Marks & Spencer is scheduled to open an 80,000 sq ft store in the former House of Fraser building in autumn 2026. At Cribbs Causeway, MINISO and Loungers are upcoming. Lidl is taking over the former Currys/PC World store at Avonmeads, while Aldi has opened near Imperial, reflecting activity in retail parks alongside the independent operators such as ClothingXchange that are cited as drivers of renewed demand.
Operators continue to respond to the reduced number of units by focusing on independents and experience-led retail. Future activity will depend on how these formats perform against the backdrop of fewer total outlets across the city.
