Bristol’s smart energy grid is cutting bills for residents in Bedminster and St George

Smart meters and a new local energy-sharing network have cut electricity bills by an average of £127 a year for 4,000 households in Bedminster and St George since the programme launched in March 2025, according to Bristol City Council data published yesterday.
The figures come as extreme weather events, from China’s second typhoon in a week to wildfires that killed 12 in southern Spain, underscore the urgency of decentralised, resilient power systems. For Bristol, the shift means more than just climate targets: it is reshaping how homes are heated, cars are charged, and money is spent.
From solar roofs to shared power
At the centre of the change is the Bristol Energy Cooperative’s ‘Power Together’ scheme, which links 1,200 homes with rooftop solar panels in Southville to a peer-to-peer trading platform. Surplus electricity generated on sunny afternoons is automatically sold to neighbours within the BS3 postcode at a rate 15% below the national average wholesale price. The platform, built by local startup GridShare Ltd based on Gloucester Road, has processed 2.7 million kilowatt-hours of trades since January.
In St George, the council’s retrofit programme has installed air-source heat pumps in 340 council homes on Church Road and around St George Park, replacing ageing gas boilers. Tenants in those homes reported heating bills 31% lower last winter compared with similar properties still on gas, according to a June 2026 council impact assessment obtained by The Daily Bristol. The £4.2 million project was funded partly through the government’s Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund.
Businesses are joining in too. At the Paintworks creative quarter in Bedminster, a 500-kilowatt community battery, built inside a repurposed shipping container behind the main events space, stores cheap off-peak grid power and supplies it to 14 workshop units during peak hours. The battery has cut the collective electricity bill for those businesses by £18,000 since it went live in April.
What it means for your pocket
For the average Bristol household, the shift is starting to show up in monthly statements. According to the latest data from Bristol Energy Network, homes with a smart meter and a heat pump are paying about £890 a year for electricity, compared with £1,210 in a similar gas-heated home without smart controls. The upfront cost of a heat pump, typically £8,000 to £12,000 after government grant deductions, remains a barrier. But the council’s new ‘Green Neighbourhoods’ loan scheme, launched on 1 July 2026, offers zero-interest finance for up to 10 years to 500 households in the first cohort in east Bristol.
Next up: the planned ‘Bristol Virtual Power Plant’, a city-wide network of home batteries and electric vehicle chargers that will be controlled by a central algorithm to stabilise the National Grid. The council expects to sign a deal with Octopus Energy by September, with the first 1,000 participants able to charge EVs for free during midday solar peaks starting in November. Residents can register their interest at the council’s energy advice centre on Broadmead.
The technology is not flashy. It lives in meter cupboards, on rooftops, and under pavements. But in Bedminster and St George, it is already cutting bills and keeping lights on when the wider grid struggles. For Bristol, that is the point.
